The Hat The Kate Brady Series Book 1 eBook Babette Hughes Reviews
Enjoyable read but angels a more exciting read I enjoy the writing style of this author A book worth looking at for a quick read
This was an okay book not too deep , but it held interest. The history of the author was intriguing, so the subject matter of the book made it more interesting.
Babette Hughes evokes the Depression years of the 1930's to perfection. The hard, drab existence of the widowed alcoholic mother, contrasted with the luxuriousness of the pretty young wife's leisured days and glitzy evenings, lived under the domineering shadow of her ruthless gangster husband. The way she exacts her revenge makes for a satisfying, fast-paced ending.
A depression era mobster drama from a smart female perspective. Very refreshing. This is not a dudes mobster story, glorifying guns and violence. This is a story that brings to life the harsh realities of life in the 30's, especially for women. The protagonist is a smart woman who has lived a tough life and has very few options. We follow her through the story and quickly become her biggest fans as we watch her mature, grasp the horrors of her life and boldly take charge. A triumph.
"The Hat" is engaging from the get-go. The story is spellbinding and well written. Having read Ms. Hughes previous book, "Lost and Found," I was not surprised. Her writing style is clear with each sentence skillfully crafted in a way that draws the reader forward. The characters are fresh, interesting and alive, compelling the reader to care about the lives unfolding on the pages before them. Ms. Hughes insight into the psychology of her characters and of the period of time she writes about is authentic and substantial, creating a story that is both meaningful and believable.
I would recommend this book, as well as her previous book, to any fan of good story telling and clear well written prose. I have heard there is a sequel to "The Hat" and I can't wait to read it.
While I was reading about the life of beautiful, innocent red-headed Kate Brady. who suffered as a gangster's wife. I thought Nicole Kidman should portray her in a movie. It is amazing to me that Babette Hughes could tell this story which bordered so closely on her father's murder by the Mafia. It took a lot of courage on her part. This arresting book disclosed a part of Cleveland's history that I, as a native, knew nothing about. Although "The Hat" needed a bit more proof-reading, I was intrigued through the final page.
I've never been one to relish crime novels or murder mysteries--I usually find the language to sparse and the point of view lacking compassion. Babette's Hughes's novel The Hat threw me a curve ball, however. The prose is evocative without being flowery or superfluous, and best of all, the protagonist is a woman. Here we see the other side of the traditionally masculine mob story--Kate Brady, the wife of a Jewish, Depression era crime boss as she evolves from a naive teenager with few choices in life to the wife of a powerful criminal and all that that life entails. Gradually, Kate begins to try and break free from the prison of her marriage--a move that has serious consequences. The Hat refuses to glamorize the mob life, as so many books and movies have--instead it shows the "other side" --what the wife lacking a sociopathic nature has to endure. A revelation, to be sure. My only beef about the novel is that I think it could have been longer (!)--it went by so fast I felt like there were few places here and there that needed some meat on their bones. I would love to see this book made into a movie--Kate Brady is a character an actress could receive an Oscar nomination for. Here's hoping!
Okay. Didn't make me want to read any of the others in the series, which says something, since if I like an author I buy ALL their books! If you're looking for crime drama, you can't go wrong with Jeffrey Deaver.
